Dr. Lorri Riley

Dr. Lorri Riley knows first-hand how foot problems can affect your life. She herself has flat feet – a lifelong problem compounded by her athletics during her college years. In fact, this was one of the main reasons why she became a podiatrist.

While playing college basketball at the University of South Dakota, she injured her feet which collapsed her arches.  She sought out over 20 doctors who either sold her expensive prescription orthotics which only made her feet hurt more or told her that nothing could be done for her flat feet, you will just have to live with it.  She developed shin splints and knee problems which the doctors said they could fix the knees with surgery.  But her wise mother advised Lorri that if you fix your feet, your knee pain will be gone.  After over a year of searching for a doctor, Dr. Riley had total reconstructive surgery on both her feet and was able to return to playing college basketball at Black Hills State University, and yes the knee pain was gone as well.

Dr. Riley became a podiatrist and was able to help her patients with flat feet by getting correct prescription orthotics, not ones that hurt and felt like a rolled up sock in the arch.  As time went on, insurance companies rarely paid for the prescription orthotics, but many patients couldn’t afford to pay for them out of pocket. Unfortunately, Dr. Riley started getting foot and knee pain again and noticed her feet were collapsing again.  The surgery only corrected the rearfoot and she once again needed to wear arch supports.   Dr. Riley sought out which OTC-over the counter- supports she could carry in her office for her patients with flat feet and herself.  Dr. Riley tried all the OTC supports she could find but none of them worked.  She then set out to develop an OTC support for flat feet.  In 2011, Dr. Riley found the formula that worked for 90% of her patients.  She knew from her own experience how important it was to not only correct in the heel and arch but forefoot correction is also required for proper support for people with flat feet.   In 2014, this idea was patented for flat feet that corrected in all 3 areas of the foot- heel, arch and forefoot.  J1 insoles were made to provide the best arch support all the way to the forefoot, along with a comfortable top cover with cushion and deep heel cup.  Wanting to provide a quality support for average/high arches as well,  j1 insoles came out with the average style that also has a metatarsal pad to help reduce neuroma and hammertoe pain.

Dr. Riley has a special passion for helping individuals with Down syndrome, with her nephew Micah having Down syndrome.  Micah is also our VP Angie Albonico’s son.  Dr. Riley has been privileged to speak several times at the Nation Down Syndrome Conference and has a booth at the convention each year.   With over 95% of people with Down syndrome having flat feet, j1 insoles has been able to provide an affordable solution instead of bulky braces.

Dr. Riley is also the Fit Feet Podiatrist for Special Olympics South Dakota.
